Senga Nengudi: topologies brings together a selection of works covering the entire time span of Nengudi’s oeuvre — from the early 1970s to the 2010s —, along with the documentation of performances and archives on the contexto in which her work was developed.

I is a sculptural environment composed entirely of two ordinary materials: pantyhose and sand. Senga Nengudi (born September 18, 1943) is an African-American visual artist best known for her abstract sculptures that combine found objects and choreographed performance. She is part of a group of African-American avant-garde artists working in New York and Los Angeles from the 1960s onward. Born in Chicago and now based in Denver, Nengudi is perhaps best known as a member of Studio Z, a loose collective of African-American artists active in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Senga Nengudi is a Colorado-based artist who was one of the most prominent artists working during the 1970s Black Arts Movement.

In a 2011 interview with curator Kellie Jones, Senga Nengudi described how the sand-filled, stretched and knotted nylon tights sculptures that make up her ‘R.S.V.P’ series (begun in 1975) came about: ‘Because there was always an issue about money, my concept was I could take a whole show and put it in my purse.
